OUR PUPPET WORKSHOP

Each Doogle is carefully created with their own look and charms which helps in developing the characters unique personality. All the Doogles have the 'Muppet-style' feel to them, although we like to call it the 'Doogle-Style'. We love this style as it projects a warm, friendly and fun image which is what we are all about!

Above is a sketch of Buzz one of our monster puppets. His head and body has been made from urethane foam. It was then covered with a combination of antron fleece and fur fabric.

There are many techniques and styles of puppets throughout the world! You just have to choose which one is for you.

PUPPET CONSTRUCTION

FOAM There are many different types of foam available on the market that can be used for puppet construction.

Urethane Foam (Poly Foam) is a soft flexible foam that is off white, cream or yellow in color. This is the same sort of foam that you might find inside a foam seat cushion
Reticulated Foam (Scott Foam) is usually a block of foam black/grey or white in colour and is used for sculpting puppet heads.

Many places sell this foam. In Australia, I use Clark Rubber. There is an excellent book by Drew Allison which shows you different techniques to constructing puppets from polyfoam.

GLUE Contact Bond is the best way to glue foam. Otherwise I use the hot-glue-gun to apply eyes, ears and other odds and ends to our puppets.

HOW PUPPETS WORK

Webiste 'How Stuff Works' provides a good demonstration of how a puppet is performed. It also details the difference between a 'hand and rod puppet', 'live hand (two person) puppet' and a 'full bodied puppet'.

MUPPET FANS!

Disney who now own Jim Henson's Muppets have just released Muppet Whatnot characters exclusively through FAO Schwarz, for those people out there who want their very own Muppet character.
